1887 Born in Pestkovatik, Russia
1906 Settled in St. Peterburg
1907 From 1907 to 1910, he studied in Saint Petersburg,
at the Imperial Society for the Protection of the Arts
and later with Léon Bakst
1910 Moved to Paris. Associated with Apollinaire and
Robert Delaunay annd encountered Fauvism and Cubism.
Lived with Modigliani, Soutine, Leger, and Lipchit La
Ruche. Befriended poet Blaise Cendrars
1912 Partcipated in the Salon des Indépendants
and the Salon d’Automne.
1914 First solo show was held at Der Strurm gallery
in Berlin. Visited Russia and was prevented from returning
to Paris by the outbreak of the war. Settled in Vitebsk
1915 Married Bella Rosenfeld
1918 Was appointed Commissar for Art in Vitebsk. Founded
the Vitebsk Popular Art School
1920 Moved to Moscow and executed his first stage designs
for the State Jewish Theater
1923 Returned to Paris, France and illustrated Gogol's
Dead Souls. Was introduced to Ambroise Vollard
1924 First retrospective of his work was held at the
Galerie Bardbazanges-Hodebert, Paris
1930 During the nineteen-thirties, Chagall traveled
to Palestine, the Netherlands, Paris, Spain, Poland,
and Italy
1933 A major retrospective of his work was held at The
Kunsthalle Basel
1937 Chagall was naturalized as a French citizen
1940 Reflects war with La chute de l'ange
1941 Became a refuge in the United States. Designed
sets and costumes for Stravinski's Firebird
1946 A retrospective of his work was held at The Museum
of Modern Art, New York
1948 He settled permanently in France. Produced ceramics
and stained glass windows for the church at the Plateau
d'Assy, Metz Cathedral. Exhibited in Paris, Amsterdam,
and London
1951 Visited Israel and executed his first sculptures
1962 Created windows for the synagogue of the Hadassah-Hebrew
University Medical Center, Jerusalem
1964 Painted the ceiling of The Paris Opera, Paris,
France, and a window for the United Nations building,
New York
1967 Painted murals for the Metropolitan Opera House,
New York
1968 Executed windows for the cathedral in Metz, France
1973 The Musée national Message Biblique Marc
Chagall opens in Nice, France
1977 An exhibition of Chagall’s work from 1967
to 1977 was held at the Musée du Louvre, Paris
1985 A retrospective was held at the Philadelphia Museum
of Art
1985 Died at age 97 in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France
2003 A major retrospective was held at the San Francisco
Museum of Modern Art"
