Milk of Amnesia
Animated & Live Action Films
Works on Paper

May 6– July 31, 2004

New York, NY- Maya Stendhal Gallery proudly presents a solo exhibition of renowned artist and filmmaker Jeff Scher. Scher, who defines himself as a painter working in motion, combines his fascination for the mechanics of the human eye and ideas about perception to create his animations. Nine vibrant films, Reasons to be Glad (1980, 4 minutes), Milk of Amnesia (1992, 6 minutes), Garden of Regrets (1994, 6 minutes), Lost and Found (2004, 3 minutes), and Cunning Stunts (2004, 4 minutes); will be on view in the project room. These explosive montages are a unique collision of imagery and sound, bursting with dizzying arrays of color, light, figures, objects, and sexual forms that flit about like unruly thoughts—mere seeing becomes an experience of gut-churning, vibratile ecstasy. Also on view is a selection of Scher’s delicate works on paper, which were used as frames in each of his films.

Scher holds a BFA from Bard College and lives in New York City. His work is included in the permanent collections of The Museum of Modern Art, Academy Film Archives, Hishorn Museum, and Musee d’Art Moderne, among others. His films have been included and featured at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Museum of Modern Art, New York Film Festival, PS 1, The Guggenheim Museum, and The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He has received grants from The National Foundation for the Arts, The Jerome Foundation, Creative Capital, and The American Film Institute. Scher currently teaches in the MFA Graphic Design Program at The School Of Visual Arts.

A cocktail reception and screening will take place on Wednesday, July 28th from 6:00 to 9:00pm.
