Composed entirely of
decaying nitrate-based archival footage drawn from nearly a thousand sources,
this is a mysterious testament to the beauty of decomposition, with a fascinating
dialogue between the images and their own disintegration. There are four distinguished
movements in the piece (Creation, Civilization, Conundrum, Disintegration &
Rebirth), all accompanied by a soundtrack by renowned composer Michael Gordon,
which bears the same title. In Morrison’s own words, “it’s a
testament or analogy to our own human experience where our will or our subjective
experience believes in some way that we are immortal, and we are able to continue
with our lives, ironically, tragically, heroically, in spite of the fact that
we are decaying.” "Decasia" premiered at the 2002 Sundance Film
Festival and was named one of the ten best films of 2003 (#3) by J. Hoberman of
the Village Voice. This is one of Bill Morrison’s pieces, which is included
in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. |
